Ngaphe, 13 February

A free lunch for villagers in Myanmar’s MagwayRegion turned sour after it landed many villagers in the hospital with food poisoning.

About 230 villagers from sartatku Village, Ngaphe Township in Magway Region fell ill after eating rice, fried dried fish, bean sprouts and bean soup served at a novitiation ceremony (Shinbyu). Nearly 230 students were taken to a nearby hospital to receive medical treatment. Many were vomiting and some described aches and pains all over their bodies.

The 41 sick villagers were receiving medical treatment and they were not in critical condition under the close care of a group of medical staff led by Medical Superintendent Dr. Aung Kyaw Naing from a rural hospital.—Yu Yu Thein (IPRD)
