The value of the border trade between Myanmar and neighboring Thailand increased slightly to US$1.59 billion as of 28 February in the current fiscal year from $1.54 billion registered in the corresponding period of the previous FY, according to data released by the Commerce Ministry.
Between 1 October and 28 February in the 2019-2020FY, Myanmar’s exports to Thailand were pegged at over $1 billion, while imports were estimated at $478.9 million.
Of the seven border trade points between Myanmar and Thailand, the Myeik and Hteekhee gates witnessed a decline in trade in the current financial year, while the remaining showed a slight increase.
Last year, the Hteekhee gate saw the largest trade among the Myanmar-Thailand checkpoints. This year, trade at the gate dropped by over $164.79 million.
The value of trade stood at $55.97 million at Tachilek, $788.347 million at Hteekhee, $493.47 million at Myawady, $88.66 million at Myeik, $156.227 million at Kawthoung, $2.036 million at Maese, and $10.878 million at Mawtaung.
Myanmar primarily exports fishery products such as crab, fish, and shrimp, as well as onions, sesame, dry tea leaves, coconut, and turmeric to Thailand. It imports capital goods such as machinery, raw industrial goods such as cement and fertilizers, consumer goods such as cosmetics, and food products from the neighboring country. —GNLM
