A plane carrying the World Health Organization’s laboratory equipment and experts who can support humanitarian response amidst COVID-19 landed Yangon International Airport yesterday.
With the shipment arranged by the World Food Programme, WHO brought key laboratory equipment for the National Health Laboratory (Yangon) and eleven experts from different organizations.
“Today we have just completed flight number 8. For a month and a half, WFP have managed to create a lifeline connection between Yangon and the outside world, bringing a lot of help with aid supplies and incoming and outgoing passengers in the fight against COVID-19,” said WFP’s Deputy Country Director Mr Walid Ibrahim.
“Today flight in particular helped us with the opportunity for eleven experts arriving in Yangon from different organizations including GIZ, ICRC and World Bank in addition to a number of UN agencies. The flight also carried key laboratory equipment designated to the National Health Laboratory,’ he added.
“In view of the extension by the Government on the lockdown for another 15 days, we continue providing this flight service until when international commercial airlines will be up on their feet again.
The WFP’s Global Logistics Service Provision Plan aims at connecting logistics hubs around the world in order to provide an essential link with countries that needs to bring in cargo.
Similarly, India, China, the Republic of Korea, Singapore and Japan provided Myanmar with the medical supplies in support of fighting against the COVID- 19.— Zaw Gyi
