School closures extended across China

17 February

School operators across China have delayed the resumption of classes as more than 70,000 people have been infected with the new coronavirus in the country.

Elementary and junior high schools in China initially planned to resume classes on Monday after the extended Lunar New Year holidays.

But some schools now say they will not reopen until March 2 at the earliest.

The education authorities began providing online teaching materials for elementary and junior high school students on Monday.

They include videos of teachers giving lectures about English and mathematics and instructions on how to avoid catching the virus.

Schools for Japanese students in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou have delayed their reopening to March 2 or later.
