NY State to ask incoming travelers to quarantine

The governors of New York and two neighboring US states have announced that travelers from states where new cases of the coronavirus are surging will be strongly urged to quarantine for 14 days.

Infections have been on the rise since late May in southern and western US states that reopened relatively early. Daily cases have surged to as many as 3,000 to 5,000 in Arizona, Texas and Florida.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said at a news conference on Wednesday that he and the governors of New Jersey and Connecticut are announcing a joint travel advisory for people coming in from states with a high infection rate. That referred to nine states as of Wednesday, including Arizona, Florida and Texas.

The governor of Washington State, which was initially listed among the nine states, claimed that his state was erroneously included on the list.

US media reported that a Cuomo spokesperson said Washington was later removed from the list.

Cuomo criticized states that resumed economic activity too soon, pointing out they've spread the virus and have hurt the economy.

He said, "We have worked very hard to get the viral transmission rate down and we don't want to see it go up again because people are traveling into the state and bringing it with them."
