The Myanmar Rattan and Bamboo Entrepreneurs Association has asked the government to allow it to lease 5,000 acres of land in western Bago for planting bamboo and hardwood, said U Nay Tun Min, chair of the association.
The association has submitted a request for leasing 5,000 acres of land from the Forest Department, he added.
“We have forwarded a lease request for 5,000 acres of land this year. It has not been approved yet. Those lands are designated for setting up community forests. Villagers will get 5-10 acres of land leased by the government for 30 years. The association will buy the raw products under an agreement,” said U Nay Tun Min.
In addition, factories will be built nearby to make value-added products, according to the Myanmar Rattan and Bamboo Entrepreneurs Association.
At present, the association has leased 100 acres each in Taikkyi in Yangon Region and Minhla in Bago Region. It has been four years since the association began setting up bamboo plantations.
“We take bamboo originating from Taninthayi with a view to get good quality. Myanmar has a number of good bamboo species,” said U Nay Tun Min.
However, raw bamboo has become rare. Besides, its price is higher than in other countries, said bamboo and rattan entrepreneurs.
The association is conducting courses related to bamboo selection, value-adding technology, market exploration, and bamboo and rattan cultivation.
