MoTC celebrates World Maritime Day online

Union Minister for Transport and Communications U Thant Sin Maung delivered a speech at the World Maritime Day online event yesterday morning.


During the event, he said that the International Maritime Organization leads member nations in celebration of the World Maritime Day every year to help improve maritime safety, reduce water pollution and effectively use modern technology for sustainable development in the maritime industry.


The theme for World Maritime Day 2020 is ‘Sustainable Shipping for a Sustainable Planet’, which provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. All member nations have to undertake to achieve the targets.


The Union Minister also highlighted the UN’s 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and the maritime transport sector. He said that the event also intended to raise awareness about climate changes and proper management of oceans and seas.


He also talked about the implementation of Myanmar Sustainable Development Plan (MSDP), which has five targets. He added that Myanmar National Transport Master Plan, which is eco-friendly, has also been implemented to promote the entire transport sector of Myanmar.


He said that the government and Department of Marine Administration has provided necessary services and assistance to Myanmar seamen during the COVID-19 pandemic.


During the event, the message sent by the Secretary-General of IMO was presented. Then PowerPoint presentations on activities of Myanmar maritime sector and maritime training in Myanmar.


The online event was also participated by Hluttaw representatives, government officials, representatives from the International Maritime Organization, international partner organizations, maritime associations, maritime training schools, and other officials.
