Leiktho residents cultivate turmeric on commercial scale

Residents in Leiktho town, Kayin State cultivate and produce turmeric, one of most useful herbs on a commercial scale.
    

The turmeric is categorized into two species, yellow turmeric and bitter turmeric. Yellow turmeric is grown on a commercial scale while bitter turmeric is found in the jungle naturally and bitter turmeric is used for medicinal purpose. Price for per viss of turmeric is set at K 700 for cultivation. When harvest season for turmeric starts, per viss of raw turmeric is sold for K 400 while the price for per viss of dried turmeric is around K 3,000.
    

Many local people in the area now expand cultivation of turmeric because the herb becomes marketable one. The harvest season for turmeric usually reaches in November and December.
