Health officials discuss preventive measures against COVID-19

The World Health Organization proposed an official name for the illness caused by the new coronavirus: COVID-19 on 11 February.

The Ministry of Health and Sports organized the 16/2020 daily meeting to discuss measures related to prevent acute respiratory disease 2019 Novel Coronavirus yesterday morning.

Permanent Secretary of the ministry Dr Thet Khaing Win presided over the meeting, and discussed following the case definition of Standard Operating Procedures in accordance with the guidelines of WHO, setting up quarantine zones, isolation wards and ICU wards for emergency cases at the State/Region hospitals, and giving health advises to those who were discharged from the hospital after the 14 day quarantine period.

The Permanent Secretary also instructed for readiness of face masks and health knowledge posters at the event in Nay Pyi Taw to unveil Bogyoke Aung San Statue on 13 February. It is estimated that about 20,000 people will attend the event.

He also discussed sufficient viral transport medium (VTM) used in sending laboratory specimens to the National Health Laboratory in Yangon, transferral of patients to major hospitals in respective States/Regions, purchase of medical ventilator.

The Permanent Secretary also talked about preparations for medical screening when Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 06 arrived at Thilawa port in Yangon on 12 February afternoon for the joint oceanic research between the two countries.

Director-General Dr Thar Tun Kyaw also discussed the update information about the 2019 Novel Coronavirus, control and prevention measures of Myanmar across the country including at the border crossings and the prevailing health conditions of 59 Myanmar students who were brought back from Wuhan, China.—MNA (Translated by Aung Khin)
