FARMERS in Patheingyi Township, Mandalay region are happy as they get a good price for the seasonal plums (Taiwan) this year, according to plum growers from Patheingyi Township.

At present, the plum is sold at K12,000 per carton for large plum shape, K6,000-K8,000 per carton for second grade small plum shape and K7,000 per carton for a small one in the domestic market. The plum is trading well in the market and earning a good price, it is learnt.

“Last year this time, we did not sell well the plum fruit because of COVID-19. This year, the fruit has yielded abundantly in the early harvest season and the fruit price moves upward as the demand is high. The plums are yielded only once a year. The plum trees are started growing in July and they bloom in September. It can be started harvested in November and December. Due to the lack of imports of apple from China, domestic consumers are buying more plums instead of apples. Consequently, the price of plums is getting a good price. The jam businesses are also using more plums as there is no fruit to make the jam,” said U Myint Swe, the plum grower from Hsedawlay village, Patheingyi township.

Around 50 cartons and 30 bags of Taiwan plum are conveyed to the domestic market daily. The plums are transported Yangon, Lashio and Mandalay regions and are mostly conveyed to Yangon and lower parts of Myanmar.

The prevailing price of plums are ranging between K6,000 and K12,000 per carton depending upon the size. There are more than 100 acres of plum plantation in Patheingyi township. Each acre of plum earned between K2 million and 2.5 million. — Min Htet Aung (Mandalay Sub-Printing House)/GNLM
