Ghani reelected as Afghan president

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has won a second term in a disputed election held almost five months ago.

The election commission made an announcement on Tuesday.

It said that Ghani had secured the simple majority required to win by obtaining 50.64 percent of the votes.

Ghani gave a speech at the presidential palace.

He said, "I'm dedicating this victory of the people, to the people, and as the first servants, with our united team, we will always safeguard the rights of the Afghan people."

The country's chief executive, Abdullah Abdullah, came in second with 39.52 percent of the votes.

The election was held on September 28.

The result was expected in November.

But the final result was delayed, after a possible glitch in an anti-rigging voting system made a recount necessary.

The Taliban have strongly dismissed Ghani's re-election.

The anti-government group issued a statement following the election commission's announcement.

The group said in the statement that it rejected Ghani's "unlawful" reelection.

It added that the election was held under occupation and did not reflect the voices of the Afghan people.
