Fruit exports to China now permitted through Lwejel, Kampaiti

01 June

Myanmar can now export fruits to China through Lwejel and Kampaiti borders besides Muse, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

Earlier, watermelon, muskmelon, mango and plum were allowed to export to China only through the Muse border. Now, Kampaiti and Lwejel are available for fruit exports.

Myanmar’s mangosteen, rambutan, lychee, watermelon, muskmelon, mango and plum have been cleared for import by China’s food safety inspection mechanism — General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine (AQSIQ). The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation has already sent information on tissue-culture bananas, limes, pineapples, avocados, and pomelos to China for legitimate trade.

China accounts for 95 per cent of Myanmar’s fruit exports. At present, high-security measures in the light of coronavirus in China’s border areas caused a long queue.

Following that, transport delays caused damage to fruit quality and doubled truck fares. The fruit growers and traders are suffering losses during the pandemic, according to a border depot. —
