Fire torches 18 houses in Hlegu Township

At least 18 houses were destroyed by the fire that broke out in Darpain Taung Village, Hlegu Township in Yangon Region on 22 February.

The fire is believed to have started from ember in the kitchen of a house belonging to a man named U Thura Htay, 23 from Darpain Taing Village at about 2:50 p.m. on 22 February. Local policemen and firefighters rushed to the scene of fire to put out the blaze which was completely extinguished about 30 minutes later with the use of five fire engines.

18 houses were engulfed by the fire and an estimated loss of property due to the fire is around Ks. 2 million. In addition, the fire made 72 people—36 men and 36 women—from 18 households homeless and the fire victims are now taking shelter at their relative’s houses.

In connection with the fire, the house owner is being questioned and taken action over fire negligence by the local police.—Naing Lin (Hlegu)
