The number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines have surged to 56,259 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 2,124 more infections.

The DOH said on Monday that the number of recoveries further rose to 16,046 after 2,009 more patients have survived the disease.

The death toll also increased to 1,534 after 162 more patients have succumbed to the viral disease, the DOH added.

To lessen the risk of community transmission, the government on Sunday said that it is now discouraging patients from home quarantine.

Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, co-chair of the government's coronavirus task force, said from now on, confirmed patients are required to stay in quarantine facilities.

Moreover, Nograles said that it is compulsory for all patients to be isolated for 14 days in the quarantine facilities.
