Abe: 6.5 million dollars for disaster relief

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says the government will set aside about 6-and-a-half million dollars in disaster relief for people affected by Typhoon Hagibis.

Abe said at an Upper House Budget Committee meeting on Wednesday that the funds for recovery will be disbursed from the national budget's 2019 reserve fund.

He said the money will be used for emergency transports of relief supplies and to further boost support for the disaster survivors.

He said the government will keep doing whatever is necessary to allow municipalities to concentrate on emergency response and recovery efforts without worries about funding.

Abe also said 110,000 police, firefighters, coast guard and self-defense force personnel have been engaged in round-the-clock search and rescue operations.

He said temporary levees are being installed at rivers that have breached their banks and pump trucks are draining water. He said most flood waters had receded as of Tuesday at 58 locations across 16 prefectures.
