256 killed, 2,588 injured in Thai road accidents during New Year holiday

Death toll over the past five days of New Year holiday has risen to 256 in 2,529 road accident cases, said in a report released on Wednesday by the Department for Prevention and Mitigation of Public Disasters (DDPM).

A total of 42 people died on New Year's Eve and 567 others were injured, bringing the total number of injured in the 5 days New Year holiday to 2,588, said DDPM.

 

The department said drunk driving accounted for 32.29 percent of the accidents, followed by speeding at 29.52 percent.

 

Meanwhile, the state-run Transport Company on Wednesday estimated that about 130,000 New Year revelers will travel back to Bangkok on public buses on Wednesday night and it has increased the number of daily bus services until Friday to accommodate the increasing passenger loads.
